Selected quotes and notes from Count Time Podcast with LD Azobra Interview with Len Garrett

Born poor in the segregated south Len Garrett learned to survive and plotted his way out of his hometown of Silsbee, Texas. He thought he’d hit the jackpot when he was drafted by the Green Bay Packers and later played for the New Orleans Saints and the 49ers. Dr. Garrett describes his journey to success and happiness.  Len was a founder of the Baton Rouge Chapter of the NFL Players Association and the Professional Athletes Supporting Students (PASS).

Good evening. Good evening. Good evening it’s 4:00 PM. Stand up it’s count time, time for every man and woman to stand up and be counted. Welcome to another edition of Count Time podcast. I am brother LD Azobra. Thank you for joining us today.

Today of course, you know, we got another living legend, a dear friend, a brother, colleague, confidante mentor. It goes on and on and on. We’ve been working together for quite some time. He’s been someone, I guess with my go to friend we’ve been knowing each other for quite a while and I’d like to welcome here my friend, Dr. Leonard Garrett. Welcome to Count Time.

Thank you so much, brother LD. I appreciate this opportunity to be here with you this afternoon.

LD
I don’t even know where to start it. He wrote a book. The name of your book.

LNG
The name of my book. It’s A Man Called Graveyard.

LD
Hold on. The name of the book is. The name of the book is A Man Called Graveyard. It is an interesting title.

LNG
A Man Called Graveyard. Yes, sir.

LD
Like the graveyard that we go.

LNG
It’s symbolic of the graveyard you go out and bury people in and you see those steel, you see those monuments and those stones. It’s pretty much like that. The book is only one element of my life, but our relationship and friendship goes back some 25 – 30 years even before your son was born. We go back aways and this book has only highlights of some of the things that I’ve done. But our friendship goes beyond this book and it’s about relationship, friendship and kinship that we have built with one another over the years.

LD
All that sounds good. But he didn’t put me in the book, so I’m a little disappointed.

LNG
There were a lot of people didn’t make the cut.

LD
You’re not even from Louisiana?

LNG
No, I’m not. My hometown is in small place in Texas. It’s in Southeast Texas. A place called Silsbee, Texas. It is in the Golden Triangle.
